Conservation-themed teacher workshop in Miles City Oct. 15 >
MILES CITY – Attend a free fish- and wildlife-themed educator workshop with an optional field trip and earn a trunk of conservation-themed readers for your classroom!
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host an educator workshop on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Miles Community College in Miles City. In addition to free books, educators can earn up to six OPI-PDU credits by attending.
Also included in the workshop is an afternoon field trip to a local waterbody to collect macroinvertebrates and learn what they can tell us about water quality and the aquatic food web. Teachers can attend just the morning portion dedicated to the readers or participate in the field trip as well. Lunch will be provided in between sessions.
New this year, FWP is offering Conservations Kids Readers, which are fish- and wildlife-themed books designed by Montana teachers and FWP biologists and educators for elementary school reading programs.
After participating in this in-person training, teachers earn a trunk with readers on three Montana wildlife species for every student in their class to read as a group. The trainings introduce teachers to biologists and the work they do. Trainings cover how the readers can be used and connect teachers with supplemental materials to help reinforce reader themes. FWP recognizes reading is a focus of elementary education, and these readers are the perfect way to bring fish and wildlife education into your classroom.
These readers meet educational standards set by the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) while showcasing a few of Montana's iconic wildlife species. The engaging format includes key questions that help students approach wildlife management from a “how to think” perspective, elevating students’ understanding of Montana’s unique wildlife species while fostering reading comprehension.
Participants in the field trip will need to arrange their own transportation. The excursion should conclude by 4 p.m.
This workshop is for teachers and anyone else who offers natural resource lessons or homeschooling, but space is limited.
