Elkhart County lawmakers: Local students encouraged to apply for House internship
STATEHOUSE (Sept. 28, 2026) – Elkhart County legislators are encouraging local students to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program for the 2027 legislative session.
State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City) said this paid, full-time internship is open to college students, recent graduates and students in law or graduate school from January through April.
"Interning at the Indiana Statehouse provides college students with a unique hands-on opportunity to learn about state government," Abbott said. "Working alongside lawmakers and staff on issues affecting all Hoosiers is a great way to build skills, grow professionally and cultivate a passion for public service."
State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) said interns work in the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis full-time Monday through Friday during the legislative session and gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process.
"For those who are interested in state government or public service, the House internship is a great start," King said. "The daily tasks interns perform are essential to assist staff and lawmakers, giving students a real-world job experience."
Positions are available in legislative operations, policy and communications.
State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) said this spring semester internship gives interested students opportunities to interact with state legislators, state agencies and private sector organizations, as well as participate in a weekly speaker series featuring Indiana civic leaders.
"There aren’t too many internships that provide you with such valuable skills and connections like this," Miller said. "There are multiple positions open in different departments, and eligible students with any major are encouraged to apply."
"The House internship program is more than a resume builder, it's an experience that cultivates the next generation of state leaders," Wesco said. "I hope to see students in our community consider this opportunity and learn how they can get involved in the issues and decisions that affect Indiana."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
