ASAP Empowers Students to Be Heroes During Red Ribbon Week

News originally published by

DVIDS - Georgia

The last week of October is Red Ribbon Week, and this year, White Sands Missile Range’s Army Substance Abuse Program turned White Sands School into a safe space to ask questions and learn. The dedicated ASAP team visited classrooms, delivering age-appropriate lessons on drug prevention, healthy choices, and the importance of staying drug-free. Students actively participated in activities and eagerly shared their perspectives.

Lively discussions blossomed as students opened up about peer pressure, friendship, and ways to make positive decisions both in and out of school. To top it off, the team handed out vibrant bracelets, pencils, and other fun swag, giving each child a lasting keepsake and a daily reminder of the commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.

The 2026 theme is “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.” The team brought activities and real-life scenarios to classrooms, ensuring students of all ages understood why it matters to say no to drugs. Their hands-on approach made a big impact, sparking thoughtful conversations and empowering students to be heroes in their own lives.

Red Ribbon Week honors Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Camarena served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years in 1968, then joined the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Camarena was detailed to go to Mexico, where he remained on the “trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers,” according to the DEA. However, in 1985, Camarena was tortured and murdered by drug traffickers whom he was investigating in Mexico.
